FOURTH ROUND STRUGGLE
HOW BLACK BEAT SCHLAPP. SYDNEY, June 23. Black yesterday met a dour opponent in the fourth round in E. G. Schlapp. the Victorian. The lead changed on the outward journey until they were all square at the turn. Missed putts at the 13th and 14th cost the New Zealander two holes, leaving him one down at the 15th. The 16th and 17th were the most sen stional of the day. At the former Black drove atrociously, pulling his second from an awkward lie into the long grass, but his third soared over a bun kcr and then hurdled the protecting bunker to settle near the pin, a truly amazing and daring recovery which enabled him to square. Black disappointingly duffed his ap preach with the 17th hole at his mercy, as Schlapp was under water in a ditch, and took four to the green. The 18th was the acid test, both players putting most accurately. Black, though short with his approach, was straight enough to win the 19th. The competitors are now reduced to eight. Black meets R, H. Bettingtori to-morrow.
