BROUGHT A FORTUNE

LUCK OF THE GAME POLYMELUS THE GOLDMINE The luck that comer to a man at the ringside is strikingly exemplified in the purchase of Polymelus by the late Mr S. B. Joel, whose death was recently recorded from England. 4 ‘ Chiron’ ’ writes: “If ever a man was chased by good luck it was Mr Joel on the day he purchased Polymelus. Mr Faber sent Polymelus to the Newmarket October sales, and told his trainer, Frank Hartigan, to bid up to 4000 guineas for him. When Hartigan bid 3800 guineas Mr Joel jumped the price to 4000 guineas, and Hartigan was placed in an exceedingly awkward position. His limit had been reached, and. after considering the matter, he decided to go another 100 guineas, and bid accordingly. When M. Tattersall turned to Mr Joel, the latter shook his head to intimate that he would not go on. “Then Mr Tattersall did something he had never previously nor has since done. He resorted to argument. When Mr Tattersall pointed out that Polymelus was in two races, which he seemed almost certain to win, Mr Joel retorted: ‘Yes, but the bookmakers won’t let you bet on him.’ Mr Tattersall then replied: ‘Well, he is in the Cambridgeshire, and you can bet as much as you like on that race.’ That settled the matter, as Mr Joel went to 4200 guineas and got Polymelus, w’ho not only won the Cambridgeshire, but also numerous other races, and brought him a fortune in stud fees.’*
