ASTRONOMER’S CLOCKS

Lu give an absolute check for setting a clock, a photo-electric cell, or electric eye, is used by astronomers to record with utmost accuracy the passage of a star over a given meridian. For this purpose the cell is placed behind the astronomical telescope, and a hair line focussed at the middle of the eve piece. When the image of the star comes upon one edge of the open ing, the light passing the edge is used to produce a musical note in an auxilary device connected to the cell. V hen the star coincides exactly with the hair line, the light, and also the musical note, are interrupted. Simultaneously a photographic record is made.
