SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL The senior competition was advanced a further stage on Saturday when Hautapu defeated Pirates by 12 points to nil, while Old Boys secured a five-point, victory over United. Bright sunshine was the weather’s contribution and the ground was in good order. Hautapu 12 v. Pirates 0. By defeating Pirates by 12 points to nil. Hautapu now share the top position on the championship ladder with the wearers of the black jerseys. Hautapu owe their victory chiefly to their forwards who played a magnificent game and completely outclassed the opposing vanguard. The blue and black backs wore also superior to the Pirates rearguard. Beaten fore and aft, the holders of the championship cup never looked like winning, and gave a very mediocre display. The whole team seemed to lack its customary dash, the work of the Pirate forwards in particular, foiling short of expectations. Play was chiefly confined to the forwards, spectacular passing movements amongst the backs, being few and far between. The Hautapu centre spoilt a number of movements by giving wild passes. As an exposition of Rugby, the match was a disappointment. but there was no doubt as to which was the better team. Hautapu were superior in every department of the game and nobody will begrudge them their well-deserved victory. Pirates kicked off with the sun in their eyes. Dean kicked over ‘he black line and Leahy forced. Pirates attacked and Woodhead unsuccessfully tried to “pot’’ a goal. Leahy wa> penalised for hanging on to the ball in the Pirates twenty-five. and TThompson kicked a goal. —Hautapu 3; Pirates 0. F. Thompson set the Hautapu backs in motion, but the movement broke down as the result of a wild pass by Doan, who was playing centre. Beiliss and Appleton broke away, but wore caTod back for a knock-on. The Hautapu backs came into action again, hut another wild pass by Dean spoilt a promising movement. Goer retired hurt nt this stage and was reby Gray. D’-'an passed to Smith, to Hall, who made a dash down the side-line but was forced into touch by Leahy, near the corner. It was a smart piece of work on the part of the Pirates captain. Hautapu had Pirates hard pressed when D. Derbidge secured from the ruck and tried to find touch, but Lo Lievre fielded the ball ana “potted” a beautiful goal.—Hautapu 7; Pirates 0. Half-time sounded soon afterwards. Upon resuming, W. Thompson tried to force his way over, but was brought down near the Pirates line. Hautapu kept up the pressure and their efforts were rewarded when Appleton got over and touched down. F. Thompson converted. Hautapu 12; Pirates 0. Gray. Graham, and Cleaver figures in a movement which gained muen ground. F. Thompson retired hurt and his place behind the serum was taken by McLennan, who had been playing first five-eighths. Graham broke away and passed to Cleaver, who knocked on, thus losing a good opportunity to score. The game ended soon afterwards with the scores; Hautapu 12; Pirates 0. Mr A. T. Moore was referee. ALLEGED THEFT. Two charges of stealing money from the dressing shod at the Oval Domain. Taihape, wore preferred : gainst n Maori named James Henry, alias James Rohia at the Taihape Police Court on Wednesday. Mr W. n. Fookos. J.P.. occupied the Bench. The amounts involved wore 3s 6d and 2s 61. It is alleged that the money was stolen on June 6 and 11. Sergeant Joyce applied for a remand until Friday, June 19. The application was granted. GENERAL NEWS The weekly railway euchre party was held on Tuesday evening, and attracted over 70 card players. Twentytwo games were played and the ladies’ prize was won by Mrs D. Bailey with 15 J games. Mr O. Godfrey and Mr Farmer tied for the men’s trophy with 15 games each, and in the play-off the latter was successful. Novelty prizes .were awarded to Mrs Swcdlund and Mr Geange. Points prizes for the last throe months were won by Mrs Swcdlund and Mr Poynter. Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith were in charge of the card room. A dance was held at the ’conclusion of the euchreparty, the music being supplied by Carrington’s orchestra. Extras were played by Mrs Seager, Mrs A. Taylor. Mr E. Garrett, and Mr Myrsack. Mr D. Thompson acted as M.C. MAJESTIC. “The Big House,” coming to the Majestic Theatre at Taihape on Saturday, is a thrilling convict story based on the episode which took place in America recently when the convicts at a prison tried to escape. Machine-guns are brought into action and modern warfare is introduced into the prison. Wallace Beery takes a leading part and is ably supported by a first-class cast. SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL. OLft BOYS 3, UNITED 3. The minor attraction on Saturday was the match between Old Boys and United, which resulted in a win for the former by 8 points to 3. The game was kenly contested, with the issue in doubt until the final whistle sounded. Erie Fleet kicked a penalty goal for United, while W. Collier and Roach scored for Old Boys. The latter’s try was converted by Collier. Roach’s try was one of the best scored this season, and he received numerous congratulations on his excellent effort. Mr L. J. Patrick was referee. GENERAL NEWS. Struck by a falling tree, Mr Horace Frew received a fractured collarbone and severe injuries to his chest and neck. Ho was admitted to the Huia Street hospital for treatment, and is progressing as well as can be cxpeccd. The mishap occurred on Thursday and was the third accident in which Air Frew has been involved during recent months. Some time ago he was injured in a blasting accident, while on another

occasion he had the misfortune to cut his foot. A most enjoyable snooker tournament Wc.s held at. the Otaihape Club on Saturday evening. Senior and junior players were paired together and much interest was manifested in the, results of the various games. Tho final attracted a large number of spectators. The winners were Messrs A. B. Swcdlund and L’ P. Marsh. Tho runners-up were Messrs W. H. Maclean and Norman Anderson. At the monthly meeting of tho Taihr.pe Borough Council on Friday evening it was decided to inform the Tai hape Rugby Union that owing to lack of funds the council is unable to grant the union’s application for seats in “lip Oval Domain under the trees facing No 2 ground. The council adopted tho rocommonda th n of the Oval Domain Committee that the same arrangements whereby 25 per cent, of the nett proceeds of the grandstand was granted to all local sports bodies, and the A. and P. Association using tho Ova: Domain during th° year ending March 31, 1931, obtain for .ho year ending March 31, 1932. Ci. Christensen remarked that tho council was very docile on this subject. The Mayor replied that having given a thing, it was very difficult to take it away. Cr. White saw no reason why the privileges which had been granted last year should not be extended again this year.
