DANGEROUS DRIVER

TWO YEARS OFF ROAD. SPEEDING IN THE AVENUE. Two charges faced Raymond Victor Chadwick when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to both, one of dangerous driving in Victoria Avenue, and ono of driving without a license. Senior Sergeant McLean told Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., that the defendant was very fortunate that he was not in Court on a greater charge. Two taxicars were coming down the Avenue at a speed which could be shown in evidence as between 40 and 50 miles an hour. The leading taxi driven by Chadwick, collided with a ear turning into Liverpol Street. Nobody was injured but the cars were damaged. The police had not been able to find the other driver. Speaking for defendant, Mr Blennerhassett said that Chadwick had been driving for six years. He had no possibility of finding employment after the case. Any line imposed would fall on his people. The offence of not having a license had taken place on the first, day of the year. In imposing sentence, the Magistrate said that a fine would obviously mean that defendant would go to prison through inability to pay. Ho would be convicted and ordered to pay costs <• the first charge, and prevented from holding a license for two years. The costs were 19s. On the second charge he was convicted and ordered to pay cost amounting to 10s.
