THE WINTER SHOW

WANGANUI ATTRACTION IMPROVED ENTRIES MANY SPECIAL FUNCTIONS. Indications point to this year’s Wan* ganui Winter Show, which opens <>o Thursday, being the best so far promoted. Entries are larger than last year iu nearly every section ami competition promises to be keen. The committee realised that considerable imp ovement was needed to increase public patronage and in honest endeavour has been made to supply that want. Backed by a faithful few the Wanganui Winter came into being and has promoted itself without financial loss up tn now. Thursday will be Judges* Day, when the work of awarding honours in all sections will be completed. A reception is to be tendered to old Identities of the district and presentation of civic badges is to take place. So far as side shows uro concerned it Is promised that there will be a greater \ariety this year than ever. Several attractions not previously shown at Wanganui nro listed to take space. On Friday sheep dog trials are to take place in the morning and the judges u» the Toy Dog section will complete then task. In the afternoon there is to bo a special wool demonstration and tha farmers’ fleero competition will be decided. Tn addition the ATasscy Col* lege intend giving a demonstration of the “Benzol” wool test. There will also be a demonstration of a French Robot (mechanical man) on a wellknown brand of cream separator. This figure and appliances is reported to cost upwards of £3OO, and is worth seeing. A special appliance fcr egg grading is to be on view. The committee has arranged a novel “Hush. Hush,” affair, but details would not be divulged to a reporter who made enquiries yesterday, the secretary advising that full information would be made available on the stand in the Home Industries shed.

It is intended to keep the show open until 10 p.m. Saturday is to be the big day. A' monster trades procession has been organised and there will be a parade of children’s decorated box-carts, headed by the Queen Alexandra Band. The starting point is to be Taupo Quay. A ten-guinea cup has been offered by the show executive for competition in the trades procession. AU the junior “Good Citizens” of Wanganui are ta be “received” on Saturday afternoon. * “Aliss Wanganui” will hold Court and there will be much ado as the nobility of the city come forward to receive honour at her hands. They will arrive just plain Bill, John and Dick. They will go away with rank. It would bn fitting if the populace turned out on masse to do them honour. In the dog trial section the final four •logs are to compete for a 20-guinca cup donated by Air Donald Ross. The donor’s object is to encourage dogs with a high degree of common sense, patience and obedience. What should prove of great moment to a very largo public will be “Misi Wanganui’s” garden party and assembly of bachelors. There will be old bachelors and young, smart bachelors and slovenly, good looking bachelors and bad. Someone has suggested that, a widower or two thrown in would not come amiss. There is sure to be a note of frivolity about this. It is probable that several engagements will be announced. Wanganui and Afasterton Harrier, are to compete over the Bramwell course for the coveted Benson Cun. This trophy has hopes of coming back to its home city and the finish of the race on the showgrounds will be the . centre of interest for a large section of ] the public. The North Island buck-jumping contest is to bo held in connection with this year’s Wanganui show and tn lent from all over the Island is to compete. It is a well-known fact that Southern Taranaki can boast of some top-notch riders, but there are a few about Wanganui who will take some beating. A comprehensive view of the programme arranged by the committee is convincing on the point that a special effort has been made to improve the show attractions. “Welcome Week” has added its special note and if the Weather God wills it the Winter Show which marks the ninety-first birthday of Wanganui should outshine its predecessors by a wide margin.
