JOY NIGHT SUCCESS

ATTENDANCE ABOUT 1000 £6O TO MAYOR’S FUND. With the, big floor of the National Mutual Buildings packed with dancers. Joy Night, held by the Welcome Week Committee on Saturday, was an unqualified success. The attendance was close on a thousand, and about £6O will be handed over to the Mayor’s Relict Fund from the venture. A band and three glittering manned fire engines led the crowd down the Avenue at the opening of the evening. Evening dress mingled with fancy costumes, while here and there was the inevitable straw hat —worn at a carnival tilt. The floor was fast and the orchestra inviting. Supper was to be had upstairs, the dancing being held on the ground floor. Roll-down did a good trade, and al though the night outside was cold, soft drinks were in demand. At one stage, while the orchestra was having supper, a Maori took the piano, and with two stringed instrumentalists Io aid him. had the crowd thinking that a “Joy Night” had really come. I’he dancer.were loth to let them go. Urged by the success of the first venture, the committee, is holding another on Wednesday evening. All proceeds arc to go to the Mayor’s Relief Fund.
