SERVICES IN EMPTY CHURCH
The Rev. Edmund Alexander Lowden, vicar of the little parish, of Compton Abdale, England, tolls the hell every Sunday and prays in an empty church for a congregation holding its own service elsewhere. This has happened for seven years, for during that period there has been a feud between Mr Lowndes and tho villagers. The quarrel, which shows no sign of dying, began, according to parishioner*, when tho vicar declined to allow them to use the church hall piano for a conee rt. ‘‘l was hoping,” the. vicar said just before Easter, “that this Easier would mark the finish of Jiis regrettable* feud. T. ring the church bell niy/elf every Sunday morning ami evening, and have done so for seven years, but nobodv conies near, and so T kneel nt the altar and pray for them, hoping ami know iug in my heart that things will be put right one day. 1 shall celebrate l.aslei , Communion, but .1 do not expect any| congregation.**
