Shropshire sheep were first accorded a separate classification at English shows in 1860. Animals of the breed were taken to America prior to that date. In 1855 an importation was made direct to Virginia. The Shropshire’s first appearance in the American show ring was in Michigan in 1875. The breed is widely popular in both Canada and the United States. The American Shropshire Registry Association was organised in 1884, and claims to have the largest flock book in existence.
