MOTOR-CYCLING
NOTES AND COMMENTS. During last, year only 10,262 moto* cycles were exported from tho United J States, the number contrasting witl 6.265 in 1926 and with 37,622 in 19201 A Mr. Lapsley, of Southampton, BtiW rides an old motor tricycle, although h€ has turned 70 years of age. He is considering the purchase of a more moden mount, a motor-cycle. I “Witness said ho took a twig from I the hedge and upon inserting it Into the I exhaust pipe found there was a clear- / an< e right through to the cylinder, | which allowed’ the gases to escape beilore exploding.”—From a report in an English paper. It is estimated that the output of motor-cycles from German factoriel amounted during the past year only to
r roundly 105,000 machines, as compared I with 186,000 in 1928. Last year’s outI put thus shows a decrease of 81,000, or 1 approximately 43$ per cent. i Experiments with pillion-riding, which I are described in a report of the British Motor-Cycle and Cycle-Car Research Asi sociation, indicate that the general conclusions appear to bo that a motor-cycle ; with pillion passenger is at least as safe , as a machine ridden solo. To Avoid Trouble. , There arc a number of adjustment! to be done and precautions against . trouble to be undertaken before setting out in anticipation of a trouble-free journey. Attention to the following details may save several stoppages on the road. Adjust and lubricate chains; drain and refill crank case, gear-box and oil tank; inspect brake linings, electric wiring, battery level, Bowden controls and tyres and tubes; check over magneto; lubricate wheel, head and fork bearings; clean carburettor and if , necessary, decarbonise and grind valves.
