RED POLL CATTLE

' SOCIETY'S ANNUAL MEETING. I r \LM EIRSTON N., June IS I The annual meeting of the New Zea land Red Poll Society was held in tin Breeders’ Club at the Showgrounds yes terday. Mr. ,1. W. Harding over a representative attendance. The tenth annual report was present ed as follows, being taken as read:The year began with 83 members, bul closes with only 78. This is the first year in which no new members ha\ < been enrolled, a circumstance that must be attributed to the general depression in farming, rather than io a reduced interest in the breed. On the contrary, the transfers registered show that the number of sales made is well up to the average, and that purebred cattle have gone to many stock-raisers who havt not had them, before. Wo regret that death has removed one of our life mem bers, Air. J. L. Bruce, who used to fol low our progress with keen interest. Four members have resigned, having given up breeding. One of these is Air B. W. Harvey, who also vacates his seal on the council. Entries of cattle fur Vol. VI I. of the Herd Book, comprise over 130 bulls and 200 females, which may bo regarded as very satisfactory under present conditions. The statement of accounts shows a profit of £6O for the year, and assets that include over £3OO in cash investments besides the stock of Herd Books. Air. Harding said ho regretted that there was a drop in membership, but stated that this was only to be expected iu the present times. The secretary intimated that there were 355 entries in the Herd Book. Tho election of officers resulted afollows:—Patron, Sir R. Heaton-Rhodes (re-elected); auditor, Air. G. H. Waymouth (re-elected).. For the five vacant seats on the council, there were only five nominees, namely Messrs. L. C. Anderson (Wanganui). H. G. Bryant (Manukau), J. W. Harding (Waipukurau), L. J. Wild (Feilding), and H. Wilson (Huntly). No election was therefore necessary.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £575 15s 4d. The statement of income and expenditure showed a satisfactory position. Concerning herd summaries. Mr. Wild stressed the importance of the system. Tho full value could only be gleaned if all members forwarded the summaries of their herds. Tho society was unique in respect of the summary system. COUNCIL MEETING. At the conclusion of the annual meeting, a council meeting was conducted, Mr. Harding presiding. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. Harding; vicepresidents, Alessrs. J. Donaldson (Stirling, Otago), and W. Leask (Waikato), re-elected; executive committee, Messrs L. C. Anderson, Harding, Forster-Pratt,. G. McLeod and Wild, re-elected enbloc; honorary secretary and treasurer, Air. Wild (re-elected). Concerning judges for the next Royal Show at Christchurch, Air. Harding was selected as first choice, Mr. G. R. For-ster-Pratt (second choice) and Mr. J, Risk (third choice). It was resolved that the usual dona j tion of £6 6s. be made to the Royal Agricultural Society.

Mr. Wild was appointed representative at the conference of the Royal Agricultural Society. Mr. Wild asked for instructions as to how ho should vote on tho matter of importation of stock in relation to foot and mouth dis ease. He considered that no layman could judge the matter. If anyone did anything to introduce the disease into this country, he would be more to blame than the man who introduced rabbits. At Home the germ of the disease had not yet been isolated, although the period of incubation was known. It was a highly technical subject. It seemed to be humanly impossible for the disease to be admitted if tho quarantine regulations were observed as tho disease made its appearance within three weeks after the germ had commenced work. Mr. Harding said that tho Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, had inspected the quarantine stations during his visit at Home and appeared to bo satisfied with the conditions. It was decided that Mr. Wild bo instructed to vote for a remit supporting the lifting of tho embargo.
