A narrow escape from death or serious injury was the experience of Mr George" Penny .of Okaihau, when, driving a motor-lorry through the Awarua Gorge, about 30 miles from Kaikohe. on his wav to Kaikohc front \\ hangarei about midnight last night. The night was very rough and we’, with lightning. The lorry went ov t the gorge, falling 200 ft. into a creek, where it now lies submerged. In the descent tho roof of the cab struck an obstruction and was torn off. When the lorry struck the water. Mr Fenny struggled clear and managed to reach the bank and ultimately the road way, where he was picked up some time later bv a passing motorist and taken home. He received a severe shaking and minor cuts and bruises, hut his condi tion is not serious. His escape is all the more miraculous owing to the fact that the bottom of thr gorge where the lorry fell is covered with rocks and boulders. ’The creek was in flood ow ing to heavy rains.
