IMPOSTER’S FRAUDS
TWELVE MONTHS’ GAOL [ Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, June 17. An astonishing talc of fraud and credulity was told at the Police Cuii't when Claude McLaughlin, aged 21, alias Claude Solones, alias Dr. Claude Schreider, was charged with obtaining £92 by fraud, stealing £lO in cash ;u.d typewriter, two charges of telling fortunes, and intoxication in a car. Accused was arrested last week and remanded, but yesterday when he .vent to the police station to report he a*rived in a car drunk. Accused said that in January an hotel waitress went to accused to have her fortune told. He lold her that she would be lucky il she invested. He was running a radio company and invited her to invest with him. She gave him altogether £92. including £5O for ‘•stamp duty.’’ from another man he borrowed a typcw.H-i and immediately sold it. A tram c.-r--ductor had his fortune told and gave accused two £5 notes, although he ha I told accused that one of his predict ions ivas absolutely false. Accused pretended to burn the bank notes, but it was only a trick. The prosecuting detective conclude I: •He is a pure unadulterated imposter if the worst type.” Counsel said accused would repay. The Magistrate (Mr Hunt): •’Wiil th** He won’t be earning for twcl e months. ’’
