MOTOR-CAR SPRINGS

STRENGTHENING METHOD. DISCOVERY IN ENGLAND. LONDON, June 5. Tho remarkable discovery that steel locomotive and motor-car springs gain one-fifth to one-half greater strength when machined and polished has been made by the Department of Scientific am Industrial Research. The discovery, which applies to any unmachined and unpolished steel, led t.o further investigation, the result of which indicates the probable development of processes which will allow full surface resistance without initial machining, and result in either cheaper and lighter springs, or stronger springs of the present weight. These would •be especially valuable on rough roads in the (Dominions. Spring-makers and vehicle builders already are co-operating in the use of the discovery.
