STATEMENT IN COMMONS LONDON, June "5. Mr Wedgwood Benn circulated in the House of Commons a statement covering the events in Burma last week. This showed that in the Tharrawaddy and Insein districts daeoities have been less numerous. In Henzada the situation lias been difficult owing to tho low numerical strength of the military police, but troops would arrive there shortly. In the Promo district the police and troops had had several successes against tho rebels and the situation had improved. In Tha; ttyo the original rebel area was reported to be sctllir.g down, but the daeoities had been numerous in the north district, ami there were signs of disaffection in the nighbourhood of the districts of Min bee and Alagwe. In the Pegu district, over 30 prisoners broke out of the Nyaulgelbin subgaol. They captured 15 police car bines and made for the forests to the west. Attacks on Indians and Chinese still continue in several districts in lower Burma, but. the situation is gradually improving. A large number of Indian immi grants left Baugoou during the last tortnight. The economic situation shows no marked change. Cultivation is starting slowly in several districts. The report states that relief works will probably be required in August or September, after ploughing has finished.
