SUBMARINE NAUTILUS HELPLESS IN MID-ATLANTIC ALL ENGINES OUT OF USE WARSHIP ATTEMPTS RESCUE | By Telegraph—Press Aseociation—Copyright] Received June .15, 9.35 p.m. NEW YUKK, June 14. The New York tanker, Independence Hall, has sent a wireless message that she is standing by the Nautilus, which is in distress 1500 miles from New York. All of her engines are disabled. The Alauretania and other vessels have offered aid. The battleship Wyoming had a heavy lino near the disabled Nautilus, but the storm-tossed submarine lacked the power to manoeuvre itself into a position to take it aboard. Tho Navy Department advised on Sunday night that tho submarine had only enough power in its batteries to send emergency messages. It was ho[.ed that after daylight it would bo possible to get a line on board. Conditions in the submarine were unchanged apparently during tho last few hours. A later message states that the submarine is disabled and tossing in heavy seas a thousand miles west of France with two United States battleships standing by to give her a tow when the seas moderate. Word was flashed to tho Naval Communications station of lhe Navy Department that tho Arkansas and Wyoming were ready to assist. The submarine’s seaboard engine and port motor are disabled, and the batteries aro dead. A brief reassuring message has been received from the Nautilus: “We are O.K. so far. Communicate later if we can scare up a few more batteries.” A message said that the difficulty with the batteries resulted from a niishop on Saturday when one of the cylinders of the starboard engine cracked. At the time there was a low charge in the batteries.
