MONKEYS IN DEMAND
NECESSITIES OF SCIENCE Afonkcys will very shortly enjoy the special protection of the French Government. The reason is that time after time during the past few years scientists havo pointed out that monkeys are essential to scientific progress. Dr Voronoff says he needs a constant supply of healthy chimpanzees for his gland-grafting operations; the Pasteur Institute cannot secure nearly as many monkeys as it desires and now the Academy ot Afcdicine has announced that more monkeys must be supplied for the preparation of the serum required to combat yellow fever. The Colonial Minister had asked tho academy to submit a report on he be‘t means of fighting that disease, especially in French West Africa. The reply of the learned assembly is, in effect, “Give us more monkeys. ’ ’ It is said that the Colonial Afinister will therefore bo asked to issue instructions for the preservation of the simian in all French possessions and protec to rates.
