FAST SCORING
NOTABLE EFFORTS IN CRICKET In view of the New Zealanders’ rapid scoring against Oxford, it is interesting to note that the fastest scoring on record is that of W. Hyman for Bath Association v. Thornbury in 1902, this batsman piling up 359 out of 466 in LOO minutes. Hyman scored 62 off two overs from Dr. E. M. Grace, brother of the great “W.G.,” hitting Grace for 32 sixes. G. L. Jessop was a batsman who had a habit of forcing the pace, his best performance being 191 out of 234 scored in 90 minutes, for Gentlemen v. Players in 1907. His tally included five sixes and 30 fours. Batting against Sussex for Nottingham in 1911, E. Allctson knocked up 189 out of 227 in 90 minutes. As a team, however, the New Zealanders’ performance must stand as a record.
