PROFITS ON LOW CHARGES. WELLINGTON, June 11. “Six miles for a penny at the cheapest rates and still the railways pay,” said Mr W. E. G. Bender, a civil engineer in the employ of the Bengal and North-West Railway Company, Limited, India, who arrived in Wellington by the Ulimaroa from Sydney. The railways in India covered about 40,000 miles and his company had about 2000 miles. Most of the lines, and there were 15 Eig companies which were paying propositions, said Air Bender, and even the State system paid about 5 pet cent. The. normal profit of the company by which Air Bender was employed, was 20 per cent., but on account of the general depression it would probably be 2 per cent, less this year.
