PRESENTATION TO MR ROGERS FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS AIEET Appreciation of the work done by Air W. J. Rogers during his term of fou years as Mayor of Wanganui, was expressed at a meeting of his friends and supporters last night. On their behalf Air J. Robertson handed a comfortably tilled wallet to Air Rogers. The evening took the form of a. concert and dance, tho Lyric Hall being packed. Mr Robertson said that he had been asked by the members of the ladies’ committee, who had worked so hard and well during the elections, to make the presentation. It was a great pleasure. Prominent men in the city had recently said that Wanganui was in a very sound position. That reflected great credit on the past Alayor. (Applause). Mr Rogers had held the position of Alayor during four of the worst years that Wanganui had ever experienced. He was proud and happy to have been a friend of Air Kogers. (Applause). Air J. .1. Scott said that Air Rogers’ presence in Wanganui had always been for the good of the city. He prophesied the time when Wanganui would want Air Rogers back in public life. Mr 8. J. Harris, who occupied the chair, termed Mr Rogers as one of the most Christ-like men that he had ever known. (Applause). Even the most bitter opponents of Air Rogers bad had t-j admit that he was an upright character and an honest man. In reply, Air Rogers said that on behalf of Mrs Rogers, his children and himself, he wished to thank them most sincerely. He appreciated the spirit of the‘gift. Amidst applause Air Rogers declared that he was not defeated for all time, but was “getting steam up” to come back to the J ray again. He did not want any credit for the fact as stated by men in public positions, that Wanganui was in a very sound position. He had done his bon est best for the last four years. He had no idea of deserting the Labour Party and thus deserting the people ; who had worked so hard for him in Wanganui. He was not down and out —only recuperating.
