Ten Per cent. Penalty. The Wanganui County Council decided yesterday to remit the 10 per cent, penalty un all rates paid before June 30. Pets’ Parade. Instead of the pels' parade being held un the Saturday of the Welcome Week, the committee have decided that it shall be held on the 'Tuesday, when the prize for the best imitation of Charlie Chaplin will be awarded. High Prices for Sheep. High prices for sheep are not usual these days, but at the stock sale at Waverley yesterday a special line of two-tooth ewes was sold for the record price of 18s each. It is stated that thi§ price is exceptional. Representative Hockey To-day. Wanganui's representativ men’s ami ladies’ hockey teams will take the Held to-day i.i contest with teams from Fcilding. The men’s match starts at three o’clock and the ladies’ half an hour earlier. Both will be played on Gonvillc Park. Support for Mr Coates. An enthusiastic meeting of the Waverley brunch of the Reform League was held last night when some 60 to 70 members were present. The motion ‘that this meeting of the Waverley branch of the Reform League endorses Mr Coates’ attitude in connection with fusion” was carried uranimouslj-. Jr F. Johnston acted as chairman. Highways Council. Councillor D. Mackintosh, chairman of the Wanganui County, was appointed yesterday to represent his council on the No. 8 Highways Council. It was decided to push the claims of the Upper Wangaehu Valley Ruad to inclusion in the list, of main highways. It was agreed also that the claims of the Wanganui airport ruad should be advanced.

Hospital Levy. The Wanganui County Council decided yesterday tu forward £5OO on account to the Wanganui Hospital Board to tide that body over a temporary difficulty experienced through being unable to finalise estimates. Councillor W. E. Broderick, who is chairman of the Hospital Board, saia that it was hoped to complete matters next week. Inter-School Rugby

Through the sympathetic response of tho masters of the Wanganui Collegiate ychuoi and the Wanganui Technical College, arrangements have been made tu hold the annual school Rugby football match on Spriggens Park on June 24. Following the custom prescribed by the masters of the schools, no charge will be made for admission, but a collection will be taken at the gates, the proceeds to go to the Mayor’s local relief fund.

Westmere Cheese Successes. At the monthly meeting of the directors of the Westmere Dairy Company, the factory manager, Mr C. Dickinson, and his staff, were cordially congratulated on the success achieved by the Westmere cheese rt the New Plymouth Winter Show this week. It was stated that the aggregate points scored by West :re in the different classes, which scoring brought it into first place in the points prize, was in direct harmony with the grading points awarded it at the Government grading stores throughout the past season, when the Westmere factory won the Wanganui Harbour Board's cup for the highest average grade at the port.

Moa Egg Fragments. An interest acquisition by the Wanganui Museum is a collection uf moa egg fragments presented by Mr J. West who picked them up on some sand dunes along the coast. These .fragments recall the fact that the moa used to lay eggs on the sand where the sun would hatch them out. (t is claimed that there are only two whole moa eggs in the world. One was bought by a celebrated Jewish collector in London, who paid £BO for it. while the other is possessed by the Otago Museum. It is a remarkable fact that this egg was discovered in the spoil of a gold dredge and by a miracle it was not broken. “Bully” Hayes, the notorious seafarer, was at that time working on the dredge. Another presentation is an old brass badge of the 58th regiment which was stationed at the Redoubt at Wanganui in the days of its infanev. The badge was picked up on the site of the Sarjeant Art Gallery some 15 years agu Outstanding Rat?-. A great deal uf time was devoted by a mil meeting of the Wanganui County Council yesterday tu discussion un outstanding rates. The 'county solicitor (Mr T. R. Blennerhassett) was in attendance. The chairman (Cr. D. Mackintosh) pointed uut that the small committee which had been set up to deal with inuividual cases had met with frank, open treatment at the hands of most of the Wanganui stock and station firms. In two instances, however, the county had not been given any encouragement. The county was endeavouring to meet the ratepayers in every way possible during a hard period and looked for frankness on their part in coming forward and stating their position.
