TOWN BOARD ( Action in regard to the grubbing of I gorse, etc., on streets was taken at the < monthly meeting of the Waverley Town Board last Wednesday. Those present were; Messrs A. J. A-llam (chairman), AV. Wicks, J. E. Mills, J. Dai ton and W. Middleditch. It was decided to request certain of the ratepayers tu clear the gorse or any other noxious weed from streets and footpaths adjoining their properties. Rates for the year were discussed, and it was decided to give notice that these would be struck at the next monthly meeting to bo held on July 8. General rates were fixed at the same as last year, namely 8d in the £ on the unimproved value of all rateable property in the town district. The rate on the AVater and Lighting Loan was fixed at G}d in £. Both these rates were made payable in une sum on August J. WAVERLEY DOMAIN BOARD Lessees of the Domain Board are to be notified to clear and grub all gorse and noxious weeds from their sections. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Demonstrations in machine sewing were given at the last monthly meeting of the Waverley Women’s Institute, which was held last Tuesday in the Institute’s rooms, Alrj* Sutherland presiding over u good attendance of members. The demonstration which was given by Mr Cristie and Aliss Toni, of Wanganui, proved to be very interesting to members, showing by the use of different attachments, the wide scope there is in this branch ol home’ sewing. From plain sewing and darning to fancy stitching, Air Cristie gave a lesson in the art of keeping the machine itself in good working order. These practical lessons in this usual branch of housework, were greatly appreciated. Airs Sutherland expressed this appreciation of Air Cristie’s and Miss Tout’s demonstration, in a short speech at the close of the afternoon, when afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Salter, Johnstone and Ballantyne. Lamb skin was shown by Mrs Anderson, who had tanned, scoured and curried it herself. The skin was beautifully soft, and was suitable for glove-making. OLD-TIME DANCE The usual fortnightly old-time dance was held by the Women’s Institute last AVcdnesday. There was a good attendance, music being supplied by Airs G. Williams, of Patea. Extras were played by Mrs Anderson and Air F. Sinclair. AVinnets of the Alonto I Carlo dance were Airs Coad and Mr • Middleditch. Supper proved i welcome interlude, after which dancing was again enjoyed until a ' to hour. Hostesses fur .ho evening were Afesdames Sutherland and Anderson, who carried out their duties very ably. GOLF The AVaverley Club has arranged a flag mutch for its members, to be played to-day. Members chose their own partners. The Ladies’ Club will play a stroke competition next Tuesday. There will be no draw, members choosing tluir own partners, seniors paying with juniors. For beginners, a D hole stroke competition is arranged.
