The chairman was appointed to rep- ( resent the county at the forthcoming s meeting of the District Highways Coun- , cil. It was decided to again press for (> ’ the inclusion of the upper portion of the Wangaehu Valley Road as a highway. The chairman was authorised also to bring the claims of the Wanj ganui Airport Road before the council. The Waimarino County Council wrote, asking that the traffic inspector employed by the joint counties of Wanganui, Waitotara and Patea be allowed to act in the Waimarino County at ccr- ■ tain periods. The request was apr proved and Cr. Mackintosh was author,r ised to bring the matter before the i joint committee. Mr P. Wickham wrote advising that ■i the Pitangi track was unsafe for traffic i and that the accommodation paddock ' required a new gate. These matters 3 were left to the engineer. i ENGINEER’S REPORT. ' I • i ' The engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) reI ported as follows: Alangawhero Riding. Preparations have been made for obtaining grit from Mr. Glenn’s property near the 38-mile peg for the maintenance of the northern end of the Parapara Road. This ' work has been commenced and it is J hoped that weather conditions will per Hmit of sufficient grit being obtained to maintain the road over the winter ■ months. Road widening work is being carried out successfully on the Makiri1 kiri Valley Road under the No. 5 Unemployment scheme and will be completed at an early date when similar work will be carried out on the Kaiwhaike road. Widening work is also ■ being done on the Wanganui River Road on the Gentle Annie Hill under the same scheme and will be completed in about a fortnight. It will be necessary to effect alterations to the Pitangi - cottage and proposals for this work are . herewith submitted. ’ Alangamahu Riding.—The roads in I this Riding are in fair condition. The township road and AlcDonald’s Track • have been repaired and a grit pit is i being opened near the suspension bridge ; for repairing the Creek Road and the i lower end of the Wangaehu Valley Road. Maintenance metal will be supi plied to the Alangamahu Road from Sutherland’s pit next week, when a i lorry will be available for the work. j Purua Riding.—The metalling work is i progressing favourably from Bailey’s 'pit and sufficient metal will have been j supplied in from four to five weeks. [The road grading plant is being employi cd trimming all roads in this Riding, j Kaitoke Riding.—Under the No. 5 ; Unemployment scheme Toad widening has been carried out on the majority of i roads in this Riding. The main drains have been cleared at Putiki and Kaitoko and drains are being cleared between Marangai and Wangaehu Hill.’ The protective work to the sand drift : on the Wangaehu Hill has been coni-; plcted nnd will no doubt prove effee-) tive. The fencing material will be sup-! plied within a few days, when it is pro ! posed to commence fencing the road on , the Wangaehu Hill. Kaukatea Riding.—The whole of the: roads in this Riding have been re j shaped by the grading plant and arc in . good condition. The I.ong Acre Road j is being widened and dangerous places I and a considerable improvement is being effected. Aforikau Riding.—Alaintenanee work is being carried out on Otaranoho and Alatahiwi roads and those roads arc in fair order for this season of the year. The engineering survey has been made on the Alorikau Road for a distance of forty-two chains for the purpose of I road formation. Upper Wangaehu Riding. —Casual la-i hour is employed in this Riding as re i quired for maintenance. The Public Works Department have completed •[ widening on the Wangaehu \ allcy | Road and have laid a base course of I nu-UI.
