GLARING HEADLIGHTS

DANGER TO ROAD USERS REMEDIAL SIGNAL PROPOSED AUCKLAND, June 11. The large numbers of cars with glaring headlights, and tho resultant dan ger and inconvenience to other road users, were emphasised by Mr 11. Butcher at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening. He said the headlights of many cars were so badly out of adjustment that their beams dazzled com pletely any approaching driver. The position was now worse than previous ly, particularly on the Groat South Road. Mr G. Henning said that although correct adjustment was essential, head lights had to be powerful to enable drivers to see adequately on bitumen ised roads. Even with the best lamps it was extremely difficult to see pedes trians on a bitumen road, particularly in wet weather. The touring manager said it might be advisable for tho association t" have made some apparatus for warning motorists whose headlights were notice ably out of adjustment. The appara tus could consist of a sign indicating the fault, tho notice to be illuminated when such a car appeared. A reliable officer of the association could be sta tioned at a convenient place on the Great South Road or elsewhere, am! when he noticed a car approaching with glaring lamps, he could press a button to light up tho warning and, if necessary, explain to the motorist the reason for the sign being erected. A committee, consisting of tho pre sident, Air A. Grayson, Air Butcher and tho t«>iiring manager, *us appointed to investigate the proposal, with power to act.
