BROOM VERSUS REVOLVER

Seeing two men alight from a motorcar and carry out a smash-and-grab raid at a watchmaker’s shop in jjondon recently, a road sweeper rushed at them with his broom. But one of the men had a revolver. He presented it at the road-sweeper while his companion took about £59 worth of watches from the window. Then both men made off in the car, which was driven by a third man. The road-sweeper, Mr George Smith, said: “The man with the revolver shouted 'Stand back’ or ‘Get back’--! am not quite sure which. In a second or two both men jumped back into the car and were driven off. I stopped a van and a taxi which came down Kingsway, and told the drivers to chase the thieves. It was all over in a few minutes. ’'
