OBITUARY. Another link with the early days of Waverley has been severed by "the death of Mrs Martha Jane Bennett, wife of Mr John Bennett. Shi* passed away at the Waverley Private Hospital at 9 o’clock last Saturday morning. The funeral will take place to-day, leaving from St. Stephen’s Church at 2 p.m. Fifty-live years ago, Mrs .Bennett came to New Zealand as a young bride, and with her husband, settled in the Waverley-Wait ota ra district. Here they both lived, making a host, of friends and earning the respect of all will whom they were associated. Both of Cornish parentage, Air and Alr.s Bonnett have always endeavoured to keep in high esteem the name and customs of the Old Country. Dying at the age of seventy-seven, Airs Bennett is survived by her husband, who is thirteen years her senior, and at present also in private hospital. She leaves also four daughters:—Mrs AV. 11. Watkins (Waverley), Mrs AV. Powell (Kohi), Mrs Bramley (Bulls), and Mrs Lunn (Marton). Her only son, John, gave his life in the last Great War. Al 1 sympathy is felt with her husband and daughters in their bereavement. FOOTBALL. Spectators of the match between Waverley and Upriver teams last Saturday on the local Domain were afforded a great deal of scope for line barracking. After a keen and exciting contest, Upriver proved victorious by a converted try, the score standing at B—3 when time was called. The teams were evenly matched, and the whole game was very eagerly contested. Both sides certainly have points to learn in the game, but on the whole the match last Saturday brought to the fore some excellent show of form. PERSONALS. Mr and Mrs P. Mitcalfe have returned to Hautuma, Hawke’s Bay, after a short holiday in Waverley. Miss Natalie Mitcalfe returns to Wanganui Girls’ College to-day for the winter term. Miss Margaret Elmslic returns today to Wellington to commence the winter term at Training College. Miss Broderick, of Wanganui, is spending a few days as the guest of Airs Brewer, “AVaihau.” Miss Taylor, who has been spending the holidays as the guest of Miss Muir, has returned to commence the second term as drillmistress at New Plymouth Girls’ College. Miss Margaret Alexander is spending a few days in Wanganui. Mies Jessie Alexander is spending a holiday in WeL lington and is the guest of Airs Bayfield, Oriental Bay. Air Norman Parsons is at present in Hawke’s Bay, where he attended rhe meet of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club at his uncle, Air H. Parsons’ property. SOCIAL. During the past week the vogue for bridge among the young set of AVaverley and Patea reached its zenith. “Buenos Ayres” was the venue of many of Miss Ruth’s and Miss Margaret’s friends last Thursday evening when Mrs Alexander entertained five tables of bridge for the young people. The rooms were tastefully decorated with bowls of chrysanthemum and autumn foliage, while a log fire added its bright glow to the cheery-looking room. At the conclusion of the games, Miss Ruth presented the following holders of scores with prizes:—Miss Nesta Mathieson and Mr S. Train (highest); Aliss Joan Hawken and M r T. Daly (lowest plus); and Aliss Brewer and Air Snushall (lowest minus). Among those present were Air and Airs S. Train, and Mr and Airs F. Train, and Misses Al. Walkinton, N. Mathieson, J. Hawken, M. Brewer, Al. Harvey, AV. Train, D. and S. Roberts, and Messrs Hawken, Daly, Cowdrell, Rogers, K. Honeyficld’ and Snushall. Mrs Graham entertained a number of her daughters’ friends at her home last Thursday, when three tables of bridge were arranged for this younger set. Miss Phoebe wearing a gown of prunella green with shell-pink coatee with white fur, and Aliss Amy, in a frock of apricot with bridge coat to tone, helped their mother receive their guests. A very enjoyable time was spent, at the end of the games the following were the recipients of prizes:—Miss Helen Simmons and AT r Nelson Spratt (highest) and Aliss AL Hawken and Mr B. Dickie (lucky scores). Among those present were Aliases P. and H. Cimmons, A. Bradmorc, Al. Hawken, J. Parsons, and Alessrs Al. Dickie (2), N. Parsons, and N. SpratL Bridge was again the programme for the evening when Airs Bradmorc entertained a number of her daughter’s friends last Friday evening. Aliss Alison assisted he r mother to receive her guests, and the five tables settled down to some very enjoyable ‘rubbers’ and games. At supper time Aliss Alison presented the winners with prizes as follow:—Aliss N. Mathieson a nd Air S. Train (highest) and Alias Joan Hawken and .Mr D. Craig (lucky scores).

AV hat has always proved one of the most popular hunts in former seasons, was no less popular last Saturday when the. Egmont-Waiiganui Hunt Club met at Air E. Parsons’ property at Nukumaru. There was a large crowd of both riders and spectators, and '.he chase proved an exciting one. There were numerous spills, but no one received serious injury. Four kills were the result of the afternoon’s sport, all of these concluding some excellent runs. Jump? were well-prepared, and riders experiem-c'L some thrilling runs, with many jumps between. 'The double jumps also came in for their share of use, and on the whole the field gave some excellent examples of jumping. Throwing off at the homstead shortly after noon, the pack Jed the field a splendid run across country, raising a scent in the gully south of the turnip field. From hero back across a green fence, round the gums, across a single am 1 then a double jun p, and down towards the sea, the pack went well, and this splendid run resulted in the first kill. Both hounds and riders were kept busy throughout the afternoon, and all were ready to stop at the end of the afternoon. Mr and Mrr Parsons entertained afterwards at afternoon lea at the homstead, where their usual generous hospitality was extended to both .riders and those who followed in cars. Before departing for home, members and friends gathered on tho lawn, and Dp Simmons on behalf of the club thanked Mr and Mrs Parsons for th fir hospitality, and Al r Parsons for the preparation he had done in the trimming and marking of jumps. He also thanked Alessrs Parsons, G. V. Pearce, for the use of their properties. Three cheers were then given with a will, and Mr Parsons briefly replied.
