FIRST ORDINARY MEETING , COMMITTEES APPOINTED < R. F. SYME,B DEPUTY MAYOR The first meeting of the ncwJy-elect* cd Wanganui City Council was he.d last night under the chairmatship uf the Mayor (Mr N. G. Armstrong). Proceedings were brief and straight, to lhe point, the minutes being confirmed a.s the clock struck the half-hour after seven. A lengthy order paper was approached in businesslike and the Mayor declared the mceirng closed at live minutes past eight. The following were present: Crs. J. Crowley, A. E. Halligan, G. I. Jone.-, J. Robertson, E. O’Meara, L. Pleasants, J. Siddells, F. Hill, W. Al. Luxford, and F. Symes. On the motion of the Alayor, Air F. Symes was elected Deputy-Mayor. Mr Armstrong said that he moved ia thnt direction not because Mr Symes wa* head of the poll but because he was ably fitted for the position. C'r. Pleasants, who seconded, concurred. New Committees. The following new committees were appointed:—• Works Committee: C. Crow Icy ( chairman), Crs. Dickie, Halligan, Symes, Horsley, Jones. Tramways: C’r. Haligan (chairman), Crs. Hill, Crowley, U’Aleara, Pleasants, Luxford. Gas: Cr. Dickie (chairman), Crs. Robertson, Symes, Siddells, Jones, (J ’Meara. Library and Opera House; Cr. Horsley (chairman), Crs. Robertson, Pleasants. Hill and Luxford. Finance: The Alayor, Deputy Mayor, chairmen of all committees, and Cr. F. J. Hill. The following representatives on bodies outside the council were appointed :—• Fire Board; Crs. Halligan, Hill and Symes. Plunket Society: Crs. Horsley anl U’Aleara. Aluseum: Crs. Siddells and Pleasants. Employees’ Sick Benefit: Cr. Dickie. Library: Alcssrs J. 11. Burnett and G W. Currie. Girls’ College Board: Mr J. C. Richardson. Technical College Board: Cr. W. AL Luxford (appointment reaffirmed). Art Gallery; Alr L. Cohen and Airs J. A. Neame. Sinking Fund Commissioners: Tho Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Unemployment Committee: Chairman of Works Committee (Cr. Crowley) and the City Engineer (Air J. S. L. Deem). The following matters passed on by the old council were dealt with as follows: Alcssrs R. S. Lamb and Coy. coahcontract. —Referred to the Gas Committee; Tramway engineer’s report and estimates, referred to the Tramway Committee; Gas engineer’s report on coke and gas, referred to the Gas Committee; Wanganui Rugby Union’s request for lease of Spriggens Park, referred to Finance Committee for report; Abattoir Company regarding remission of rent, referred to a special meeting of the council on May 26 for the formal passing of a special order.
