UNIONISTS ATTACK POLICE MORE TROUBLE AT NEWCASTLE [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received May 13, 11. sp.m. SYDNEY. Alay 13. The abolition of preference on the waterfront at Newcastle to-day result cd in a clash bct.veen Federation members and volunteers or free workers. A mob of 200 rushed the volunteer gangs working one steamer. The gangs ran for a shed leaving four constables to face the mob, who were armed with stones. One policeman was badly injured in the face by a stone, but stuck to his job and arrested his man. Police reinforcements restored order. It is reported that the State Government is contemplating intervention in Newcastle and has instructed the drafting or regulations under which the wharves are to be placed under the control of the Superintendent of Navigation with power to exclude iinembers of the loyalist union. Yesterday’s High Court decision suggests doubt if such a regulation could be enforced. SENATOR APPOINTED MELBOURNE, May 13. Mr T. C. Brennan, K.C., has been elected Senator to fill the vacancy caus cd by the death of Major-Geneial Elliott. Mr Brennan, who is a National ist, is a brother of the Attorney-Gen-eral. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT AIDED BY DEFLATION Received Alay 13, 9.20 p.m. OTTAWA, May 12. The deflation of Australian currency has enabled that country to oversell Canada in the Chinese wheat trade this year, so the Minister. of Trade and Commerce, Mr Stevens, told the House of Commons during a statement on efforts to sell Canadian wheat in China.
