NAPIER FIRES
INQUIRY OPENED [ Per Press Association. 1 NAPIER, May 13. Commissioner J. S. Barton, S.M., opened an inquiry into the fires following the earthquake on February 3. Win. Gilberd, fire superintendent, said ke was first called to the United Friendly Societies’ dispensary, then to Henderson’s chemist shop. Owing to the fire alarms being thrown out of commission, the alarms came by messenger. All three were well alight when witness arrived. The water subsequently gave out through the abnormal demand and broken mains. Water in the baths was tried, but only one lead was available, the distance of pumping over 1500 feet being too g rG . a t f () a H° w a suitable pressure.
