BUSINESS OF THE COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD A review of the estimates for road work for the coming year was before the Patea County Council yesterday. Those present were: Councillors W. G. Belton (chairman), W. H. Watkins, C. jE. Johnston, W. Back, J. Peat, A. J. Gibbs, K. G. Watt, B. G. Scoun and J. Lupton. Messrs Sheild (clerk), and L. F. Row (engineer) were also in attendance. In regard to repairing the road from Waitotara township to the school, a letter was received from Waitotara ►School Committee. It was left in the hands of the engineer to deal with. It was thought better to make a metalled footpath for the pupils of the school, rather than spend money on repairing the road. On the council’s attention being brought to the present state of the Vveraongata jack track, it was decided, to carry out work to the extent of £l5. The engineer was authorised to inspect the track, and to arrange for the clearing of overhanging scrub and repairing. The Transport Department wrote drawing the council’s attention to the classification of the main roads in the No. 8 Highways District. The letter stated that the department purposes holding a conference of those Ileal bodies concerned to discuss the matter. —The letter was received. On the ground that there was no legal access to the rated property, Mr E. R. Nicholson, of Orangimea, objected to the payment of an extra £7 of rates. The clerk was authorised to inform Mr Nicholson that if rates were not paid within the month, action would be taken against him. Advice was received from the Public Works Department stating that that section of the Opaku Road from the junction on the Lower Mocawatea V alley Road for a distance of 1 mile 19 chains, to the northern boundary of section 5 <P.>ck IV., Opaku 4 D.) —this road to be under the control of the Patea County Council. ’the day of the ordinary monthly meeting in June was fixed for the hoMing of the annual meeting, the fate being fixed for June 9. It was decided to lay 23 chains on Mr A. Pearce’s road at Kaparawea. The chairman reported on the inspection of the Maben Road and the bridge. Dr Simmons, representing the South Taranaki Automobile Association, waited on the council with the request that the council’s representatives inspect the approaches to the Manawapou Bridge with a view to improving the visability’. Councillor Watt and the engineer were elected to inspect the bridge and to report at the next meeting- , • The chairman reported that during the month the committee set up hac viewed several stone-crushing plant? between Wanganui and Manawatu, and the engineer hoped to see several more during his holiday’ in the next month, Nothing definite had been done in the matter so far. Row; at the monthly meeting of the Patea County Council yesterday’ was adopted: “Kapara Riding.—The shell rocl metalling of the Puao section of th< Lower Valley Road is now being pro ceeded with and when completed wil finish the season’s metalling programme for the riding. The erection of tin stock suspension bridge and the re-con ditioning of the formation on Train ’: Track is now nearing completion. “Moumahaki Riding.—The two-coai scaling of 40 chains of the State Farn: ' Highway is completed. Grading on the Omata, Weraweraonga and Lakes Roadi is completed and general repairs have been carried out on the Ngutuwcr? Saddle and the Valley Road. Shor lengths of metal have been laid on the Block VIII. and Block IX. Roads, am the Grant metalling on the Motoroa am Valley Roads are now completed. Th< metalling of two sections on the Wera weraonga Road is now being carriec out. The three stock suspension bridge: giving access from the Waitotara Vai ley Road have been repaired. “Waverley Riding. Two shor lengths of metal have been laid on th* Okotuku Road aand this completes thi riding metalling programme for the sea son. Good progress is being made wit! the deviation on the Tower Road, bu some inconvenience to traffic will b caused during the next week until thmain filling is completed. The Koh and Karahaki Roads have been light 1; graded as a final preparation for th. winter. “Otoia East.—General maintenanc only has been carried out in this ridin; during the month and all roads are nov in fair condition for the winter. “Otoia West.— Metal for two section of the Kakaramea Road is now on ham and will be laid this week. The con tractor for the supply of boulders o the Manutahi Beach is making goo progress, some 8*)0 cubic yards having already been stacked. Metal for th repair of the Upper Taumaha Roa has been carted and the road will b re shaped as soon as the roller is avail * able. “Main Road. —-20 chains of widen in. on the Waitotara Hill and Vcrry’s Hil (jobs 2 and 3), have been completed and repairs ami widening have als been carried out in the Waitotara Vil Inge.
