DUNEDIN BURGUARY
MAN AND WIFE INJURED. (Ter Props Association ’ DUNEDIN, May 12. A sensational attempt at burglary, accompanied by violence, occurred just before midnight at che premises of Air \V. G. Rossiter, pawnbroker and jeweller, George Street. So far he has not been traced Air Rossiter was removing jewellery from the window to a safe when a knock on the door interrupted him. Hr opened the door when two men rushed in. One pummelled Air Rossiter, who iover 60 years old, floored and throttled him, while tho other removed rings fiom tho window. It was then that Airs Rossiter ap peared on the stairs and was knocked unconscious. Her daughter heard th«» crash of t|ie fall and jumped in ho? night clothing frent tha upstair? win dow to the varandah roof, eight feet below, raising the alarm. When Air Vcnnall arrived ho saw Air Rossiter i’ti the floor under the assailant. He broke the glass in tho top of the door, un locked it, and was. confronted by Saur dors, a powerful man, six feet tall Mr Vennail had a heavy screwdriver n his hand which he pointed at Baunders threatening to blow his brains out. The bluff of having a revolver was success ful, and the man was easily held ti* the police arrived. Rings were strewn all over the shop. It is believed tha? tho man who escaped got away with a few. Air Rossiter was unable to leave hi-' bed to-day, suffering badly from a swollen throat. Airs Rossiter’s injurieare not serious. Robert Saunders, aged 36, a nari.’e of England, appeared at tho Police Court, charged with assaulting Walter Gabriel Rossiter with intent to rob. He was remanded for eight days. A later message states that as a result of a vigorous police search, a second man was arrested to-night, ami will be charged in the morning with assaulting Rpssiter with intent to rob
