MR ARMSTRONG ELECTED MAJORITY OF 149 CITY COUNCIL ISSUE DECIDED By a majority of 149 votes Mr N. (?. Armstrong has been elected Mayor of Wanganui for the ensuing term of two years. The official recount of votes cast at the election on May 6 has been coni plcted and the figures made public by the Returning Officer (Mr A. P. London) arc as follow: N. G. Armstrong 4855 AV. .T. He will be officially installed in office to-day at noon and the first meeting of the ncwly-elected City Council is to take place on Friday night, when the personnel of committees will be decided and work on the estimates begun right away. Extra staff was employed yesterday for the purpose of checking the recount of votes cast for the City Council, and, as the rcsuult of a continuous concentrated effort the official figures were announced shortly af*er 8 o’clock last evening. Mr E. O'Meara, who on the preliminary count tied with Mr B. T. Bennet fo r twelfth place on the council, was elected on the recount by a majority of ten votes. Mr F. Symes topped the poll, healing Mr F. Hill, who was in that position after the preliminary count, by three votes. According to the old .■< tablished custom that the head of the poll should be Depu’t Mayor, it is presumed that Mr Symes will be accord- ’ that honour when the new council meets.
