ON WANGANUI TRACKS

TRAINING OPERATIONS ■ YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK (By -KESTREL:-) ; Further evidence of the approach of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter ■meeting was furnished yesterday morning, when a little jumping was done, . though there was not by any means so much as would have been seen at this stage of preparations twenty years ago There was also some fast work on number one track, which was in really good order, as the times will indicate. The best efforts seen during the moru ing were a seven-furlong gallop by Black Duke and Just an Idea, another by Knollmere, five furlongs by Cuticle and Shrewd, and a half-mile flutter by Royal Songster and Golden Shadow i Kowhatu and High Heather jumped the “country” and Auctioneer and Moerangi wore Been over the battens. Hastings Candidates. Vern Colcllo was out first with Cuticle and Shrewd, the Hastings trainer gi* ing the pair a run over six furlongs, which distance they loft behind in J in in. 18 4-ssec. The first furlong took them 14sec., but they did better over the concluding five, registering Imin. 4 4-ssec. and finishing together. Shrewd ran two good races at Hawcra last week and was rather unlucky in being /just touched off each time, while Cuticle ■ is such a smart customer that she cannot bo left out of calculations for the open sprints at. the meting. ! Kaokaoroa and Call Again were sent a mile and a-quarter at a good clip, i registering Imin. 55 2-ssec. for the con eluding eight furlongs. For steeplechasers the pair, who finished on terms, were responsible for a really pleasing effort. Royal Bengal (J. Barry) had the »<1 vantage when he jumped off at the fivo furlong post ahead of Zarene (heavy■weight) and Manifesto (A. Djixon), but i it was not long before the other pair , had made up the leeway, and at the finish they were *he best part of * length ahead of Royal Bengal. The ; first furlong took a shade over 13sec. I while the two furlongs took 25 l-ssec. | and they left three furlongs behind in 37 2-ssee., the full distance being loft i behind in Imin. ssec. It was a pleas- . ing display on the part of Zarene and I served to indicate that the Chief Ruler | mare has been improved as a result of I her race at Marton last Saturday week, i Manifesto also looks very well and has I still a good chance of adding to his winning account before running out hi? hack nominations. i Takahue was allowed to run along

over five furlongs, which he left behind in Imin. 5 3-ssec.

Black Duke (A. Didham) and Jusi an Idea (L. Dulicu) were associated in •i seven-furlong task which they left behind in Imin. 31 2 ssec., with Black Duke throequarters of a length in front of his companion. Both were striding along nicely et the finish. They too'< 27 2-ssec. for the first two furlong*-’, 52 l-ssec. for the naifmile and Imiu. ssec. for five furlongs.

Knollmere Goes Weil.

At the finish of a seven-furlong task Knollmere (H. Goldfinch) was several lengths ahead of Malahat (A. Dixon), and the Gramleourt guiding was doing it well, too. They took 52sec. to cover the first four furlongs and then Knollmere began to forge ahead, reaching the five furlongs in Imin. ssec. and get ting to the end of his journey in Imin 31 l-ssec. Knollmere had been somewhat under a cloud for several days but he served to show that there is nothing seriously amiss with him. Anotln r decent display on the flat was that, down to the. credit of Royal Songster and Golden Shadow, who go! to the end of four furlongs in a smart 49 3-ssec., the first two furlongs taking them 24 3-ssec. Royal Songster is down to contest the Flying Handicap and promises to set a merry pace. It would not be surprising to find the Prince Willonyx gelding securing a stake before long for ln„ owner, Mr H. L. Harker, the newly elected Mayor of Wairoa.

A Couple over “Country.”

Kowhatu (H. Dulieu) and High Ilea ther (L. Dulieu) were associated in a round over the “country” and both jumped well, though n trifle slowly. One circuit of five fences was considered sufficient for High Heather, who wi»” then pulled out, but Kowhatu went on and repeated the effort, making ten fences in all. He appeared to have some difficulty in negotiating one the brush fences, perhaps through there not being e,nough pace on, but he was doing it well at all the others and gave a very pleasing display Both Kowha tu and High Heather are engaged in the Grandstand Steeplechase. Auctioneer jumped five hurdles pleasingly, running straight at the obstacles every time, and on only one occasion did he rap the battens, that being at the hurdles down the back. Lack of racing may tell against him in his early engagements, but he will be heard '.'f before the winter season has progress ed very far Moerangi was sent once round on the hurdle track, jumping three flights of hurdles safely. He appears one of the most dangerous of the dozen engaged in the Rata Hack Hurdles.
