Tho police at Bulli, a picturesque coalmining township on the south coast, wero involved in a desperate affray with a large crowd of unemployed miners and others who had declared Government rations “black.” The reason for this was not explained. The trouble began in the forenoon, when about 50 Omen tried to prevent hungry comrades and their wives collecting food orders at the local miners’ hall. The police attempted to disperse the mob of jeering men, and finally wero compelled to arrest the ringleader, whereupon the remained r closed in and began au attack on the policemen with pieces of wood, also gaspipe. Tho police drew revolvers to protect themselves. They lodged their man in the lock-up and then scoured the neighbourhood and arrested ten others. Thro constables wero treated severly and aro suffering from head wounds. They are convinced that they were lucky to escape with their lives. SYDNEY DISTURBANCES COURT IMPOSES SENTENCES Received May 11, 10.5 p.m. SYDNEY, May 11. Following the organised disturbances by Communists and others, and the attack upon the police on the night of April 27 outside tho Sydney Town Hall, four men were sentenced to imprison inent ranging from three to six months. Three others were fined heavily.
