I Mrs Herbert Flower has left for a i trip to the .South inland. Mrs 11. Price, Nelson Street, is visitI ing Auckland. Miss K. Handley, St. John ’s Hill, has returned from a long holiday in Tiinaru. Miss M. Morris, Utiku, is the guest of Mrs J. Wilks. Wanganui East. Miss H. E. Redpath is visiting Auckland as the guest of Airs Couch. Miss Dorothy Budding. Palmerston North, is the guest of her mother, Airs J. E. Budding, Koromiko Hoad. Miss Gwen HeinolJ is spending the school holidays in Napier. Miss E. Harman, St. John’s Hill, is spending a holiday in New Plymouth. The Duchess of York, who, as everyone knows, is very musical and quite a capable pianist, is taking up the study of the harp. For some time now she has expressed a wish to learn the harp, which she thinks is the most beautiful of all musical instruments. Not only that, she is anxious that Princess Elizabeth shall be musical, too, and she is going to have her taught the harp just as soon as she is old enough. The Duchess is very fond of the old Scottish songs, which are usually sung without any accompaniment, and she feels that they might be improved by the addition of a harp accompaniment. The Buchess does not have very much leisure to indulge in her musical tastes, but has resolved that she will find time to study this instrument, which is the least played of all musical instruments. Three blind girls were among the sue. cessful candidates in the Oxford and Cambridge Joint Board School certificate examination. They - gained a “credit” in every subject. The question papers were in Braille, and the answers in mathematics, were typed. The girls, all aged 17, hoped to go on to a university. Miss Norma Holmes left by motor for Wellington where she will be the guest of Mrs P. Rose, Hataitai. Mr and Mrs E. W. Andrews, of Brunswick, left by motor yesterday for Wellington. Visitors to The Chateau recently included Miss F. Gouk, Messrs Hilliard, Fifer and Flood (U.S.A.), Mr Manuel! (Australia), Miss Buchanan and party (Hawera), Messrs Carthy and Lee (Wanganui). Mrs Bott, Wickstccd Street, has returned from Palmerston North and Hawke’s Bay where she has been visiting relatives. AN INTERESTING AFTERNOON The Aramoho branch of the W.C.T.U. gave a very happy afternoon last Thursday when a party of ladies went to the Old Peoples* Home. A very cheery time was spent, both the visitors and the visited enjoying the afternoon. Afternoon tea was served to the old people, and a happy musical hour was spent. Mrs T. Glovers contributed songs, Airs J. Barney delighted the old folks with musical monologues and Mrs Kay, who acted as accompaniste, also contributed a pianoforte solo. After the short programme the members of the organisation and the old people all joined in a sing-song, the participants being asked to choose thoi r favourite
