ENGINEER’S REPORT WORK IN THE RIDINGS. The Waitotara County Council met yesterday, Mr W. Morrison presiding. There were also present Messrs J. Cameron, F. Parsons, R. Farley, F. 11. Allen, A. G. Goldsbury, H. G. Birch and R. Laird. The engineer (Mr T. Dix) reported : Auckland-Wellington Highway.—The metalling of the deviation near tho 11 mile post has been re-started and good progress is being made with the work. Several portions of the highway between mile posts 13 and 17 were scarified and re-shaped, the shoulders along the asphalt pavement were made good ; the space between the rails at tho railway crossing at Kai Iwi, was asphalted. The roadway was constantly graded and excess of loose metal on curves was redistributed. The curve at the city boundary has been banked mid metalled. The contract for widening the roadway at the Pukerimu junction will be started in a few days. Tokomaru Riding.—Better progress is being made with the metalling of the Rangitatau-Watershed highway. The foundation course has now been completed. General maintenance work has been carried out on the Kauarapaoa and Ahu Ahu Roads, and liangitatauWatershed highway Waitotara Riding.—The lower end of I lhe Rangitatau. Watershed highway was graded. Surfacemen have completed widening the point on the. highway at. Paparangi. The Upper Pakaraka Bushy Park and Okohu Station Roads were metal patched and Rangitatau est, Pukerimu and Ngarino Ronds were I graded. On the Waitotara Valley Road ; surfaceman have been widening and

trimming the roadway for metalling. The contractor expects to start metalling within a few days. He has stripped sufficient metal for the works. The contract for metalling the. Parekama Road has been satisfactorily completed, and tho new metal has been consolidated by rolling. On the Pakcrimu and Rangitatau West Roads, water-tables were cleaned, slips cleared and fern cut. Brunswick-Westmere Riding. The Rapanui Heads-Mosstown ami Sprin-valc-Francis highways were graded and metal patched and watertables were cleaned. The Tokomaru East and Smith Roads were metal patched. Peat, Kai Iwi Valley, Handley, Lilybank, Grange, Brunswick, Cameron, Westmere Station, Western Line and Scaffold Roads, Roberts and Clarkson Avenues, were graded. General main tenance work was carried out on the River, Tokomaru East, and West Roads; Westmere Road has been prepared for metalling. The Council trucks will start carting metal at the. end of the week. This work will bo done under No. 5 Employment Scheme. Mosston Riding.—Fox, Lincoln and Peak Roads, Fitzherbert Avenue, Buxton and Parsons Streets were graded and Parsons Street was metal patched.
