HOCKEY

WANGANUI MATCHES HINEMOA AND STAR WIN Hockey matches on Saturday showed a considerable improvement in the standard of play when compared with the previous week’s exhibition. Both senior games were even. The ground was a trifle soft, but the cool nip in the air entis-ed action. Wesley and Stir Although Star had matters nearly all their own way in the first half, Wesley woke up towards the end of the second half, and after a bettor run of luck than in the first half, were the more aggressive and did most of the attacking. The Wesley men were not able to round off their movements, while the Star goalie, Hasler, was saving well. From the initial bully, Wesley obtained possession. They were awarded a corner, and in the defence of their goal, Latham and Orlowski were prominent. Star returned the pressure ana tho Wesley goalie, Barwod, was calico upon to show his capabilities. L. Barlow, Wesley’s left wing, was then prominent in a good run, and W. Thrush had a shot at goal. It was not success ful. Star forwards carried the ball into tho circle with a strong, fast rush. The defence was too good. After a short period tho Wosloy men had tho ball in a handy pf ition, and Thrush skied the ball over the net. Play was of an even nature until after several manoevres, when a centre to S. Goddin gave the Star man his chance and he opened their account with a well-directed shot.

Play was shifting about the field, and Thrush sent in another, but Hasler, Star goalie, was instrumental in saving. Tizard turned defence to attack. and Orlowski added a second goal for Star. Tizard then caused Wesley some concern. It was apparent that they were watching him closely. The Star forwards were getting tho ball and Barwood, in tho Wesley goal, saved. Star continued to press and a scramble opened out for Latham to bring the score to Star 3. Wesley 0. After half-time, Thrush led another attack for Wesley, but was not able to open tg 0 Wesley score. Star were still having tho better of the game, and Tizard was •commanding far too much attention from the opposition. L. Barlow, after a well-p!*'Pd movement, wax able to centre, but the subsequent shot, was weak. Play returned to tho Wesley goal, and after a corner had been awarded against, Weslov, Tizaro brought the Star total to four.

Weslov woke up, and Thrush worn, up the field at the head of a fast rush and gained the circle, but the Stat rroalio, Hasler, mot him. and saved. Shortly after, a centre to Thrush from tho right wing, gave him a good opportunity, and ho notched tho. first goal for his side. G'oddin was tho nex* to find the net, scoring the last goal for tho Star team.

Wosloy forwards secured possession and swept, down the field, but tho attack was broken up in tho goal mouth. Wesley wore determined to even the score, and were playing with much im proved dash. There was a short scramble in the circle and Thrush used his stick with weight to make the Wesley rteorc 2. L. Barlow, Wesley’s left wing, took tho ball down in a pretty movement, centred, followed the bal? in, and took the return, to add another goal to the Wesley score. In tho last stages of the game, Wesley were having the best of the play, and looked like scoring on more than one occasion. When tho last whistle went they were attacking. The finai score was: STAR 5 WESLEY ’ .. 3 The referees were Messrs Howartsoi* and A. Spurdie. Hinemoa and Old Boys The final score, throe to one, in favour of Hinemoa, was a fair indication of tho Hinemoa-Old Boys game. The game opened at a fast pace and the ball saw both ends in quick succession. Lo Brun, for Old Boys, was the first to score. Hinemoa attacked. McIntyre slipped when he secured from a throw-in, and his shot went wide. Hinemoa were on the move again, R. Hughes centering to Russell, but Hickman stopped the attack to turn it to defence, Veitch doing good work on the loft wing for Old Boys. ChumleigTi was prominent in stopping a rush, ana then Hinemoa swept up tho field, but Shepherd stopped the rush. Russel? had a shot from a corner by Gurney, but it went wide. Hinemoa sent in a volley of shots, but the play soon returned to tho Old Boys’ goal. The shooting by Hinemoa was not good enough to alter the total. Young’s defence was keeping tho attack back. At one stage the goal was besieged by the greater number of tho Hinemoa men. but Young was saving well. A fret* hit by Hinemoa was taken by S. Hughes, who sent, the ball on to Connell, who transferred to R. Hughes, but Hickman saved. Old Boys forced the play to the other end, Callaghan and Lc Brun doing good work. The advantage was only short lived, Hinemoa returning for Wilson tn give the ball to Mclntyre, who goaled in the corner of the not, thus making tho score one all. Old Boys were playing “all out.” hut. Hineinos was too strong and McTntvre repeater* his former performance. Russell scored tho final goal. The score at tho end of tho gaiiuwas:— HINEMOA 3 OI.D BOYS 1 Tho referees wore Rev. 11. G. Goring and Mr R. L. Thompson.
