BROKEN BY A KISS

SPELL OF BAD LUCK. MAN’S TURNING POINT IN LIFE. Penniless and half-frozen with the cold, a man standing in the shadow of a London theatre was approached by a beautiful young woman. “Pretend you know me,” the girl exclaimed. The man threw his arms round her neck and kissed her. “Call a taxi,” the girl then gasped. Mechanically the man did so, and, as directed, ordered the Irivcr to take them anywhere “in a hurry.” When the taxi had proceeded about half-a-milc the girl said: “I’ll get out now*. Here is enough to pay the fare. 1 was being followed by someone I simply had to dodge. Thanks ever so much for helping me.” On examining the twisted paper the young woman had pushed into his hand, the man discovered it to be two £1 notes. With this sum —less the amount of the taxi fare —he made a successful effort to regain his place in life. The man is Mr. Arnold Bell, on actor appearing in the West End. Sitting in his dressing room recently Mr. Bell told his story to a Sunday Chronicle representative. “When I was just a kid.” he said, “I ran away from a very good home, and landed in the West End of London. But I could not get a job of any sort. What little money 1 had was very quickly spent, and I had to pawn my cigarette case, and my watch, and even my overcoat. “1 earned a few pennies looking after parked motor-cars and such like jobs. It was one evening when I was r looking fur something to do to earn the price of a meal when the taxi-cab adventure happened. That marked the turning-point, and my fortunes improved from that moment. “After a good meal and a wonder ful sleep in a real bed, I went, out the following morning, and was lucky enough to get a job in a suburban i heat re. s' • * when I rover look back.”
