PATEA

SURF CLUB [Special to “Chronicle.”] That the local surf team which attended the National Surf Championships at Wanganui last Saturday conducted itself with great credit to the club is no matter for contradiction. That the Patea team gained fourth place is really something to bo proud of, tho results showfng that they beat the Castlecliff and New Plymouth teams in tho Nelson Shield competition. The Patea team were only 31 points behind tho winners, Lyall Bay team, which gained 175 points. Maranui A and B teams gained second and third places, Patea fourth, and Castlecliff fifth with ’5 points less. New Plymouth’s team were unlucky and un able to complete the water work. Patea were not so successful in the Henry Memorial Competition, which was a four man team event. They drew 10th place and had to wait till well on in the afternoon to contest in the competition. Nevertheless, the local team’s success in the Nelson Shield competition is worthy of congratulations, not only by the other members of their club, but by the residents of Patea as well. It is a worthy work that they are doing, in the saving of lives and the protection of bathers at the Patea beach, which is their special domain for the work.
