HIGHEST TOTAL YET
UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES HEAVY INCREASE FOR WEEK [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, (Dec. 1.5. There was an increase of 1592 over the previous week’s total in the number of unemployed registered in New Zealand for the week-ended December 8, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Labour (Hon. 8. G. Smith). The latest week’s total was 9630 which is the highest figure since the records of registration have been kept. Details of registrations at Labour bureaux and Post Offices, with the previous week’s figures In parentheses, are as follows: Auckland 2625 (2329); Wellington 1221 (1200); Christchurch 1671 (1389); Dunedin 742 (547); Invercargill 213 (184). Of the registrations for the five main centres, 3712 are of men with dependants and 2760 of men without defendants.
