TIMARU WOOL SALE

PRICES MAINTAINED [ Per Press Association. ] TIMARU, Dec. 15. The first wool sale of the current season in Timaru took place to-day when catalogues aggregating 5919 bales were aubmitted compared with 12,251 at t’ j opening sale last year. The reduced offerings were due in a measure to the broken weather experienced during the shearing season, coupled, of course, with a lack of anxiety on the part of growers to place their clips on the market as the result of the weakness of the demand and low values ruling.

The wool opened well, clean and in excellent condition and taken all round was quite up to the standard of previous years. There was a medium bench of buyers overseas and Dominion firms being well represented. The wool, generally speaking opened up in fairly good condition and the offering contained quite a number of choice clips. On the other hand, however, a fair proportion suffered through having been shorn while damp as the result of the unfavourable climatic conditions. The sale was quite as firm as at Christchurch but buying was spread over a wider field. Bidding r.ns very keen and well sustained throughout but as at all previous sales this season, buyers worked under restricted limits. The market was essentially dominated by Continental buyers, although it was noticeable that Germany did not operate nearly so freely as at the Christchurch sale. Bradford was comparatively quiet and America did not operate. The Dominion mills competed keenly for super lots, while local speculators were in the markets for bellies, pieces and locks. All things considered the prices were firm at Christchurch rates, there being no quotable change. The rance of prices was: Merino s|d to Bd, half bred 5Jd to 9d, three-quarter-bred sjd to 7£d, crossbred 4d to fljd, Corriedale fid to 7Jd, pieces 5d to 7Jd. bellies 3d to 6{d. erutehings 2d to 2Ad. necks 4d to 6jd, and dead 4d to 6{d.
