EXAMINATION PAPERS

CRITICISM IN WELLINGTON. OFFICIAL EXPLANATION. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Dec. 35. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand Professor Hunter has issued a statement in reference to complaints against the University authorities in connection with the papers set for the matriculation examination published in the Dominion.

“The column on the entrance examination in your issue to-day brings together fact, error and opinion in such confusing manner that the article must mislead the public,” said Professor Hunter. “Inter alia the following statements are made by interviewer or interviewed: (1) That there was a misprint in the geometry paper; (2) On some occasions wrong papers have been distributed; (3) In other cases the number of papers required has been short; (4) That the arithmetic paper was a grossly unfair type of paper; (5) That sufficient precaution was not taken to moderate the arithmetic paper. No. 1 is correct. The attention of the examiner has been called to it. No. 2 and 3: There have been no cases of this type at the examination this year. No. 4 is an expression of opinion that must be considered on its merits. No. 5 is false. The paper was moderated and modified in some particulars. “I do not propose to enter on a newspaper controversy,” the Vice-Chancel-lor added. “Any complaints made will be considered by the Senate. A complaint w’as received from Mr Armour more than a week ago and he was ad-, vised that it would bp considered by the Executive on December 19. As the report of the interviews was unfair in some particulars to the examinations this year 1 think it right to put the actual facts before the readers.”
