The necessary work was almost completed when a fresh occurred on November 29 and 30, which deposited a considerable amount of silt some distance out from the wharf and over the greater part of the length of the wharf, as shown by broad figures on the plan. This line is required as soon as possible for harbour tows. Also a short length, 18 fathoms, of coir rope has been obtained for swinging vessels. Quotations were also received for an 80 fathom line. Instructions as to whether this line is to be ordered are requested. This is the position: When the was delivered there were two eighty °fathom 14-inch Manilla ropes for deep sea towing; at the present time there is only one, and in the event of the vessel being required for a deep sea tow, she would be dependent on the one tow rope standing all strains, which is considered a very risky undertaking.
