TEST AT ADELAIDE

AUSTRALIA HAS LEAD WEST INDIES FIGHTS HARD GRIMMETT BOWLS WELL. Received Dec. 15, 10.5 p.m. ADELAIDE, Dec. 15. The weather and the wicket were excellent for the continuation of the Test match between the West Indies and Australia, but the attendance was poor. Kippax and Fairfax look the score to 341, both playing soundly till the former tipped Griffiths, giving an easy catch to Barrow behind the wickets, lie had played a great innings at an opportune time, batting for 229 minutes and hitting eighteen fours. Fairfax, making delightful late cuts, reached 34 by a hard leg-side six off Scott. Oldfield was uncomfortable before the fast bowlers. He had two lives and then drove Scott for four, but was caught at mid-off next ball. West Indies commenced their second innings and Roach was just settling down when he was bowled by Hurwood. Headley had a lucky escape early in his innings, and he batted nicely till he was completely baffled by Grimmett and Oldfield whipped off his bails.

Birkett was resourceful and made sonic nice cover shots, but in trying short runs Martin was run out owing to a smart return from mid-off by Bradman.

Constantine was vigorous, hitting eleven off three balls from Hurwood, and was unlucky to piny one from Grimmett on to his wicket. Birkett reached 64 and then was out in exactly the same manner as Headley. He had batted 102 minutes and hit live fours, displaying a variety of attractive strokes.

Bartlett sparkled and drove HurHurwood ioi successive boundaries. He then sent one straight to Grimmett at cover point. Grant and Barrow were spasmodic, the latter concentrating on blocking Grimmett. They battled hard for odd runs. The fielding was spectacular. Grant was in 117 minutes for 50. With the last ball o the day Barrow was out leg before to Bradman.
