FATAL ACCIDENT
SHUNTER'S LEGS SEVERED SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL ( When the first set of wheels of fl guard’s van severed his legs at a quarter to seven on Saturday morning in the Wanganui railway yards, John Alfred Woolnough, shunter, received injuries from which he died at 10.31 p.m. at the hospital. Deceased was • married man, 44 years of age, with fiv< children. He lived at Cornfoot Street, Castlccliff. The eldest child is ten years of ageHow the accident actually happened is evidently not known. The van was travelling before the engine- Both were stopped smartly. The injured man whji rushed to the hospital. He retained consciousness to the end. Known affectionately as “Sailor Jack,” the late Air Woolnough was very popular with his fellow He had been in the employ of the partment for a few days over years. An ex-imperial Force man, he had seen service in India and in Egypt in that capacity. During the Great War, as he was on the reserve list, he again saw service with the Imperial forces. After coming to New Zealand, Mr Woolnough took up farming in the Taranaki and was later working as a porter at Hawera. He had been in Wanganui, holding the position of shunter, for two and a half years. The funeral will leave his late resr donee at 2.30 p.m. to-day.
