CIVIL SERVICE PAY

A DUNEDIN COMMENT [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Dec. 10. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Stock Exchange, Mr E. R. Smith (chairman) said that no sufficient attempt had yet been made to reduce the cost of the Civil Service, which was notoriously top-heavy. Why should this section of the community continue to draw’ the usual salary, while the people who provided them were practically all experiencing severe reverses. Those who pay the taxes cannot longer sustain these outgoings, nor continue to provide attractive rates of pay on works for unemployed. As long as 14s a day is available the unemployed single man would not exorcise much initiative in seeking other avenues of work.
