RHODES SCHOLARS

SELECTION FOR 1931 CAEEEES OF THE CHOSEN PAIE The committee to select the Rhodes Scholars for lyjl met at Government House on Wednesday and announced, at the conclusion of the meeting, that the scholars were:— John Edward Lovelock, Otago University. John Stephen Watt, Auckland University. Mr Lovelock Mr Lovelock was born ou the West Coast, on January 5, 1910, and received his early schooling at Temuka and Fairlie, being Dux of the Fairlie School in 1922. For a year he was a pupil at the Fairlie District High School, and from 1924 to 1928 he was at the Timaru Boys’ High S‘chool. He matriculated in 1925. In 1922 he gained a Junior National Scholarship, and in 1925 gained a Senior National Scholarship. The following year he qualified for a Higher Leaving Certificate. In 1928 he was Dux of the school, and won a University National Scholarship. During 1929-39 he studied medicine at Otago University. In 1929 he passed all sections of final Intermediate Examination. As far as sport is concerned, he represented his school at football in his boyhood days, and when at the Timaru Boys’ High School took an active part in football, cricket, athletics, boxing, tennis, swimming, fives, and gymnastics. In 1924 he broke the junior record for the half-mile. In 192 G he was the holder of three senior athletic championships and broke the senior record for the. half-mile. In 1928 he won the school boxing championship, and was awarded a medal for being the most scientific boxer. In the same year he held four senior athletic championships, and broke three senior athletic records —quarter, half, and one mile. Last year ho won the Otago University mile championship, and was runner-up for the Otago provincial championship. He won the provincial championship this year. He has always taken a keen interest in the administrative side of school and university life. He intends to study medicine at Ox fern. Mr Watt Air Watt is 22 yitrs of age, aad w: s born at Boulder, Western Australia. He came to the Loin inion iu 1913, and Pom 1914 to 1/29 attended the Remuora Disuict kool. During the t.ext five years he attended the Auckland Grammar School, and for the past f-nir years had been a s’vdent at the Auckland University. F’om 1928 until the present time he has boon a lecture demonstrator in the chemistry department at the college. In 1923 he won a senior national scholarship, and in 1926 he gained a university entrance scholarship. He secured the Sir George Grey Scholarship this year, and also took the Degree of Bachelor of Science. During his term at the Auckland University he has studied mathematics and chemistry, and last year he was first for New Zealand in two of the chemistry papers. His athletic career has been an excellent one, and he has broken several records on the track, both at the Auckland Grammar School and the Auckland University. In tfie 1927-28 season he was provincial BSO yards and 800 metres champion, and represented Auckland at the Dominion championships, besides being a member of the champion relay team of New Zealand. During the past season he was again provincial 880 yards champion. Ho has also played football and taken part in School cricket, tennis, and swimming. During his university career Watt has hold important positions in the athletic club and scientific society of the university. He intends to pursue further his research work in organic chemistry.
