MINISTERIAL The Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence and Justice, is spending a few days on his farm at Te Tui, Wanganui River. The Hon. 11. Atmore, Minister of Education, attended the play staged by ex-students of the Wanganui Technical College last night. He will leave the city to-day for Palmerston North, and, en route, in company with Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P., and representatives of the Education Board, will visit Turakina, Marton and Marton Junction Schools. If time permits he will visit Makirikiri South also.

The death has occurred nt Palmerston North of Mr Gcurge John Browne, aged B's years. He was born in Southampton and accompanied his parents to New Zealand at the age of 18 on the sailing ship Bard of Avon. The family landed at Wellington, where Mr Browne married Miss Stratton, of Hutt. He worked at his trade, engineering for some years and later was employed as an engineer in the Government railway workshops at Aramoho. Wanganui. He retired in 1900 after 20 years’ service. He had a passion tor music which found practical expression in organ building. He also assisted in installing the first organ in St. Peter’s Church, Wellington. Mr Browne is survived by his widow, two daughters and one son. There an, ton grand-children anti five great-grandchildren.

Air F. W. Dawson, formerly manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been appointed assistant general manager, took up his new duties in Wellington on Wednesday, but as from December 1. Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, who has been appointed manager in Auckland, in succession to Mr Dawson, entered upon his new duties on Tuesday. Mr Dawson joined the Bank of New Zealand at Oamaru in 1892, and occupied the position of accountant in Auckland and in Welling ton, being first appointed a manager of the bank at Napier. He was then appointed Assistant manager in Auckland and left to occupy a similar position at the bank’s office in London. He returned to become inspector, and subsequently chief inspector, and in October of last year went to Auckland as manager upon the retirement of Mr J. B. Henry. Mr Chalmers entered the service of the bank at’ Te Awamutu in 1899, and after holding positions in various branch was appointed accountant at Eltham. He was then appointed to a similar position in the Fiji branch of the bank in Suva, and a stay of four years returned to New, Zealand, being accountant at Gisborne and later in Auckland. He was appointed manager first at Danncvirke, and later at Palmerston North before going to Auckland as assistant manager, where he has hold the position for the past two years. Mr Noel Wallace has been appointed assistant manager at Auckland. For the past, three years Mr Wallace has been travelling subinspector, and he was manager at Dnrgavillc.
