FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
FARM STOCK HOLD-UP. A recent paper from England states that hundreds of cattle, sheep, and pigs are in quarantine throughout Yorkshire and Durham as the result of the discovery of foot-and-mouth disease on a farm at Bilsdale, near Blockton, Yorkshire. Ail cattle, markets in the affected area have been cancelled, with the result that about 2.000 beasts, 8,000 sheep, and 5,000 pigs, all rcad.y for killing this week, must be retained by the farmers at considerable cost until the restrictions are relaxed. During this week 20,000 sheep alone would have been sold in the district.
