PATEA CROQUET The St. John’s Croquet Club paid a visit to the Patca greens yesterday in order to play a challenge mates with the Patca Club for the McLeod Cup. Prior to the big game a friendly match was played. Archdeacon Creed-Mere-dith and Mrs Blennerhassct 23, lost to Mr Horner and Mrs Glenny 26; Airs Jarvic and Airs Skeet 14, lost to Airs Gibbs and Airs Alasters 26. The cup game resulted in a win for Batea, the Association handicaps being in parentheses: Archdeacon Creed Meredith (-4) 23 v. Air Horner (ser) 26; Airs Jarvic (scr) 18 v. Air Gibgs (ser) 26; Mrs Skeet (2’/ 2 ) 2, v. Airs Alasters (24) 26; Airs Blennerhassett (4) .16 v. Mrs Glenny (3|) 17. Patca 3 games. 5 points; St. John’s 0 games, 59 points. MAGISTRATE’S COURT The u.mal monthly sitting of the Patca Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday. the following being a list of cases heard by Air J. H. Salmon, S.AI. A. num tier of civil eases were heard, judgment l>y default being given in the following cases: Patca Hospital Board v. J. W. Wishnowski, £l7 Is and costs; G. E. Taylor \. J. Whavau, £8 Ss and costs: K. A. Adams v. John Davis, £l4 5s LI and costs. The following police cases were dealt with:— E. W. Lockwood was charged with driving, a motor vehicle at a dangerous speed past junction at Alanutahi Hotel corner. The highways inspector, E. Wilson, gave evidence stating that he was standing at junction corner at 2 p.m. on October 24, when the car driven by defendant approached from the north at. a rate between 35 to 40 miles an hour. The view of side road was not good, there being several pine trees in line of sight. Defendant was convicted and charged £4 and costs. R. A. Alartin was charged with committing a similar offence, and was convicted and charged £4 and costs. W. G. Simmons, of Nipi i”, was charged with riding a mo’or cvcle at a dangerous speed at simi'ar junct'cn as previous two. E. Wilson, hrghways ins .yMor, gave evidence, stating that defendant had approached junction from the south at a speed of between 45 and 50 miles an hour, and was sitting in a racing position of motor bicycle. The view <:f side road from the southern approach was obstructed by the Manutahi Hotel, a boxhorn hedge and an iron fence. Defendant was convicted and order.fll to pay £5 and costs. R. E. Moore was charged with driving a motor lorry carrying a load in excess of 5 tons 10 cwt. E. Wilson, in evidence stated that defendant was driving a lorry with a load of slack coal weighing 6 tons from AT.anutahi railway station to the dairy factory . Air R. E. Rutherford, for defendant, stated that it was merely an error in judgment. There was an amounc of 8 tons of coal to bo carted from station to factory in three loads. Those three loads were actually taken, the defendant making an error in judgment in the first load which was the one the inspector had met. The overweight was purely accidental. Defendant was fined £l. and costs. A. Wong was charged with exposing fruit unfit for sale to the public. He plomlofi not guilty.

T. Pargeter, Inspector of Health under the Food ami Drugs Act. stated that on November at 2 p.m. he had inspected defendant’s shop and found behind the counter in permanent partions, three lots of fruit in a bad state. Some of the fruit was in a rotten state, while, others were in good

condition. None of them were marked with prices. Defendant had had ample

lime to clear away fruit that, had gone bad overnight. Defendant > not present when witness inspected the shop. He, witness, had had no occasion to warm defendant before in any way.

A. Wong stated that he was not present on the day of the inspector’s visit. When busy, witness put small lots of bad fruit in permanent partitions from time Jo time, to throw away when not busy. Witness certainly did not put them there for sale. Janies Ong, of Waverley, stated that he was in the shop when the inspector called. He gave evidence in support of defendant’s. His worship, in summing up, said he would convict defendant, and as a warning, charge him £1 and costs. PERSONAL Airs L. Honeyfield returned to Patea last night after spending a holiday in Wellington and Nelson. Airs At. C. Harding, of Feilding, is spending a short holiday in Patea, and is the guest of Airs W. F. Sheild. Air F. Grant, of Wellington, is at present on holiday leave and is staying with his parents, Air and Mrs W. Grant. Air H. Smith returned to AVanganui yesterday after spending a short holiday with his parents in Patea. Air Horrel, with his daughter, Aliss Nancy, of Rangiora, Christchurch, paid a short visit to his daughter, Aliss A. Horrell, local Plunket nurse, and returned home last Tuesday. a
